Orion Sleep Review 2026: The No-Subscription Eight Sleep Alternative?

By Steve Luu · Last updated October 15, 2026
Fact-checked against published sources and independent reviews: October 15, 2026

Disclosure: Better Vitals earns a commission if you buy an Orion Sleep System or Orion's Sleep Test through the links on this page. That deal doesn't buy a ranking: Orion is not our #1 bed cooling pick, and we don't sell top spots. Orion didn't review or approve this article.

Orion Sleep System is a dual-zone, water-based cover that goes over the mattress you already own. A bedside Control Tower heats or cools water and pumps it through thin tubes in the cover, from 50°F to 113°F. Its main pitch against Eight Sleep: heating, cooling, schedules and dual zones work with no required subscription. Sleep tracking is the paid part (Orion Intelligence, $250/yr).

Short version: a credible, cheaper-upfront Eight Sleep rival for US couples who mainly want temperature control. The trade-offs, per reviewers and owners: a bulky tower that Tom's Guide says hums, basic paid tracking, a slightly firmer feel (per Tom's Guide), a 30-night trial, three sizes, and owner reports of sensor and app problems.

How we evaluated it: this review is based on published specs, independent reviews and owner reports: Orion's pages and policies, reviews from Tom's Guide, The Strategist and TechCrunch, and Reddit owner threads. We haven't used an Orion and don't run lab tests, so there are no scores or "cools X% better" claims of our own. Specs are per Orion unless marked otherwise.

Quick verdict: who should buy Orion (and who should skip)

Good fit

  • Couples who sleep at different temperatures: each side runs its own setting.
  • Anyone who wants water cooling without a mandatory plan (if you pay upfront).
  • Hot sleepers in warm rooms who've tried bedding and room fixes. Water can cool the surface below room temperature; air can't.
  • Queen, King and Cal King owners with a 10–16" mattress.

Skip if

  • You need a Twin, Full or Split King, or your mattress is outside 10–16".
  • You're sensitive to noise or light near the bed.
  • You want reliable built-in tracking. It costs $250/yr and has weak spots.
  • You want a long trial (30 nights is short for $2,000+) or a long brand track record (Orion launched in late 2025).
  • You only run warm now and then. Start with the Hot Sleeper Score quiz.
  • You're in Canada. We couldn't confirm Orion sells there.

Talk to your doctor: a cooling bed is a comfort product. It doesn't diagnose or treat insomnia, sleep apnea or the cause of night sweats. If you snore loudly, gasp or stop breathing in your sleep, or feel very sleepy during the day, see a doctor (NHS: sleep apnoea). The same goes for night sweats that soak your sheets in a cool room, keep happening, or come with fever, weight loss or other symptoms (NHS: night sweats). Don't let a gadget delay getting checked.

How Orion works

The cover and the Control Tower

The Smart Cover fits over your mattress like a fitted sheet, under your regular sheet. Per Orion, the top is 60% polyester / 40% bamboo, a waterproof layer sits under the tubing, and it's spot-clean only.

The Control Tower heats or cools water and pumps it through the cover. Orion says you top it up once or twice a year with a purification tablet. The Strategist's reviewer said setup took about 30 minutes.

Control is app-only. There's no remote or dial. Orion's FAQ says: "Orion will continue to maintain temperature without internet. Features such as temperature control, schedules, and sleep insights require an active internet connection." (source). So if Wi-Fi drops, the bed holds its setting but you can't change it. Each side gets its own bedtime, wake time and temperature curve.

The Sleep Disruption Test ("Orion Sleep Report")

Orion also sells a one-night adhesive patch worn on the side of your ribcage. You get a report the next day plus an optional advisor call, and if you buy the system, Orion uses your results to pre-program starting temperatures. On October 15 it was listed at $25 with code SLEEPBETTER (list $100), with a 30-day refund if the report "does not give you a clear picture" (test page). The Couple's test was sold out.

It's a consumer patch, not a medical sleep study. It doesn't diagnose sleep apnea, insomnia or any condition, and Orion hasn't published a validation study. One Reddit owner called it "a waste of time" after it set temperatures they found uncomfortable.

See the Orion Sleep Test →

Safety: water, heat and power

Orion says the tower heats or cools its water anywhere from 50°F to 113°F (10–45°C), so treat the warm settings like any bed warmer (Orion help center). Orion's setup guide says to plug the tower into a grounded wall outlet, never put it under the bed or inside furniture, leave three to five inches behind it for ventilation, and use distilled water. If you see water leaking onto the floor or hear very loud or unusual noises, unplug it and contact Orion Support (setup guide; filling guide). One owner reported that the first of three towers they were sent leaked (r/Orion_Sleep), and another said the system once set their starting temperature to max heat on its own (r/Orion_Sleep). Check your settings and schedule regularly.

We couldn't find Orion guidance on babies, pregnancy or people with reduced sensation, so be cautious:

  • Never use it under a baby or in a crib. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a firm, non-inclined sleep surface for infants and avoiding soft bedding and overheating (AAP 2022).
  • If you can't feel heat well, for example from diabetes-related nerve damage, which can cause "problems sensing pain or temperature" (NIDDK), avoid long stretches on high heat and ask your doctor first.
  • Control is app-only. An older relative or anyone who can't easily use a phone can't quickly change the temperature at night. Set conservative schedules for them, or choose a product with a physical remote.
  • Pregnant? Ask your prenatal care provider before sleeping on extended heat.

Price and what you'll really pay

US prices (checked October 15, 2026)

Item Price
Orion Sleep System, Queen / King / Cal King $2,395 / $2,595 / $2,695 list
Promo on homepage (System + Sleep Test) From $2,195 (was $2,395)
Orion Intelligence (optional for upfront buyers) $250/yr
Sleep Disruption Test $25 with SLEEPBETTER (list $100)
Extend protection (adds 3 years) $399 or $8/mo
Financing 0% APR for 48 months via HFD, $199 down, "as low as $62/mo", on approval

HSA/FSA: Orion says you can pay with HSA/FSA funds through its partner Truemed. You take an online health survey on the day you buy, a licensed provider reviews your answers, and if you're approved you get a "Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)" to submit for reimbursement (Orion HSA/FSA page). That letter doesn't settle whether your plan will pay. Truemed itself says your plan administrator "has some discretion to approve or deny your HSA/FSA claim, even if you provide a LMN" (Truemed disclosures). The IRS has warned that "notes from doctors based merely on self-reported health information" don't turn wellness purchases into medical expenses, and that a plan reimbursing non-medical expenses can lose its qualified status (IRS IR-2024-65). Orion also says it "is not a medical device" (Orion help center). Check with your plan administrator before you buy, and keep your receipt and letter.

The financing catch: Orion's FAQ says "Orion purchases do not require subscription." But on October 15, when we switched the product page to the monthly-payment option, the Orion Intelligence line read "Required for 2 years" (product page). If you finance, budget at least $500 for two years of Intelligence. Pay upfront and it's optional.

5-year cost (planning ranges)

Setup Hardware Software (5 yrs) Rough 5-yr total
Orion Queen, no Intelligence (paid upfront) $2,395 $0 ~$2,395
Orion Queen, financed (Intelligence 2 yrs) $2,395 $500 ~$2,895
Orion Queen + Intelligence all 5 years $2,395 $1,250 ~$3,645
Eight Sleep Pod 6 Queen + Enhanced Autopilot 5 yrs $2,899 $1,495 ~$4,394
Chilipad 2.0 dual-zone ~$2,800–$3,400+ $0 ~$2,800–$3,400+
BedJet 3 Dual Zone bundle (Queen) $969 $0 ~$969

Assumptions: US list prices, no promos, tax, shipping, electricity or protection plans. Eight Sleep and Chilipad figures come from our Eight Sleep Pod 6 review (prices verified October 8, 2026) and our Eight Sleep vs ChiliPad comparison (updated October 5, 2026). BedJet is the sale price checked October 15, 2026.

Takeaway: Orion's real saving is software. Paid upfront with no plan, it's about $2,000 less than a Pod 6 Queen over five years; with Intelligence every year, the gap is about $750.

Do you need Orion Intelligence?

Free (no plan): heating and cooling across the full range, dual zones, temperature schedules, bedtime auto on/off, guest access, human support and the 2-year warranty.

Orion Intelligence ($250/yr): sleep tracking (stages, heart rate, breath rate, HRV, movement), nightly recommendations, water purification tablets shipped to you, and early access to new features.

So built-in tracking is paywalled. Is it worth it? Tom's Guide's reviewer scored Orion's sleep tracking 3.5 out of 5 and wrote: "On several nights the Orion failed to capture brief wake ups that I know happened and that my Oura Ring recorded." She also wrote: "I'm not sure it's worth the $250 extra to subscribe." (Tom's Guide). Already wear a ring or watch? You may not need it (best sleep trackers).

What independent reviewers liked

Tom's Guide (Ruth Jones, October 11, 2026, Editor's Choice; about a month of use) found the cooling effective and responsive. Its pros include "Dual controls keep both sides of the bed comfortable" and "Easy to set up and use" (review).

The Strategist (Amelia Jerden, June 22, 2026; nearly three months of use) wrote: "I’ve been very pleased with how effective its temperature controls are." She called Orion "a more budget-friendly version of the Eight Sleep" and said she'd pick it over Eight Sleep because she doesn't care about tracking (review).

TechCrunch (September 18, 2026) was skeptical but positive, on a unit Orion offered. It reports of the founder: "He says he is working on a more affordable model." (TechCrunch).

Owners in the threads we read generally praised the cooling. Even one who returned their system after a replacement wrote "the cooling itself is great" (r/Orion_Sleep).

What reviewers and owners complain about

Tower hum and light

Tom's Guide lists this con: "Control Tower makes a low-level 'hum' that some might find distracting" (source). Lowering the noise level slows the thermal response, per Tom's Guide. Some owners call it quiet. The Strategist also flagged a bright light on the tower base. We found no independent decibel figure.

Tower size

Orion lists a 24" × 9" footprint. Tom's Guide calls it a "bulky control hub." The Strategist wrote: "It’s much larger overall than its Eight Sleep counterpart, the Hub, which could fit under my bedside table." It's narrower, but harder to hide (source). Plan floor space and an outlet.

Basic, paid tracking

Tom's Guide sums it up: "Sleep tracking is basic." Owner threads go further. One owner who was traveling said the bed kept generating sleep data for him while his partner slept at home. An Orion staffer (u/OrionJonathan) replied in the thread: "The sensors can detect presence but are not able to uniquely identify a sleeper based on biosignals." (r/Orion_Sleep).

A slightly firmer feel

Tom's Guide: "It also adds firmness to your mattress, so side sleepers might feel some pressure at the shoulder and hips."

Sensor, app and connectivity reports

This is the most common complaint in the owner threads we read. All are on r/Orion_Sleep, Orion's official subreddit, where the founder replies; we opened them October 15, 2026:

  • Sensors on two units. A software engineer who returned their system wrote: "But the sensors have real problems," and said "a replacement unit had basically the same issues." They credited Orion's support once it was escalated, but said it "took way too long" to get there (thread, August 2026).
  • App and controls. An Android owner reported a slow app, wrong sleep and wake times, and a tower dropping off Wi-Fi, and wrote: "The lack of any type of physical controls is really annoying." The same post says the support "is very good and very responsive." An iOS owner replied: "I’m on iOS so maybe it is better but my experience has not been nearly that bad." (thread, June 2026).
  • Connection and replacements. One owner wrote: "This is the 3rd tower I’ve been sent (first one leaked, second one didn’t make it, 3rd one won’t connect)." Another commenter said switching to a 5 GHz-only Wi-Fi network helped (thread, June 2026).

These are individual reports, not a failure rate, and we can't say how common the problems are. Unhappy owners post more, and on Orion's official subreddit staff, including the founder's account, reply and say they're working on fixes. If you buy, test both sides and the app hard within 30 nights.

Figures as of Orion site, Oct 15, 2026 BV Pod 6 review, verified Oct 8, 2026 BV Eight Sleep vs ChiliPad, Oct 5, 2026 BV BedJet research, Oct 15, 2026

Orion vs Eight Sleep Pod 6: Eight costs more and requires Autopilot in year one, but adds Full and Solo sizes, vibration alarms, snore features, add-ons and a longer track record. The Strategist noted Orion lacks "vibrational alarms and snore detection." Orion wins if you just want dual-zone water cooling with no plan. Full breakdown: Eight Sleep Pod 6 Review 2026.

Orion vs Chilipad 2.0: both use water with no subscription. Dual-zone Chilipad usually means two docks at a similar or higher price. Sleepme has the longer history and a remote; Orion adds optional tracking. See Eight Sleep vs ChiliPad.

Orion vs BedJet 3: BedJet blows room air, so it can't cool below room temperature, but it dries sweat, heats strongly and costs under half as much. In a room under about 79°F where sweat is the issue, BedJet is the value buy.

All four, ranked by use case: best bed cooling systems 2026.

Orion's sleep claims, in context

Orion's product page shows "+26% fewer wake-ups after falling asleep," "+19% more minutes of REM sleep" and "+13% more minutes of deep sleep." The footnote reads: "*Based on an internal study. Figures reflect improvement among the lowest-performing sleepers using Orion." (source).

That's an internal company study that hasn't been published or peer-reviewed. Orion doesn't give the method, how sleep was measured, the sample size or a comparison group. The figures cover only its "lowest-performing sleepers," and people who start out sleeping worst tend to look better on later nights whether or not anything changed (regression to the mean). Treat it as marketing, not evidence, along with Orion's line that body temperature is "the #1 controllable component of sleep quality." Dr. Michael Breus, quoted on Orion's pages, holds the title "Chief Sleep Officer at Orion," so he isn't independent.

Independent reviewers found something narrower: the cooling and heating work well for comfort. That's a fair reason to buy, not proof of better sleep stages.

Talk to your doctor: if poor sleep is affecting your days, a temperature gadget shouldn't be the first or only step. If you have trouble falling or staying asleep most nights for weeks, see a doctor: the recommended first treatment for chronic insomnia is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), not a device (American College of Physicians). Loud snoring, gasping or pauses in breathing can mean sleep apnea, which needs proper testing (NHS). Night sweats can be caused by medicines (including some antidepressants, steroids and hormone therapy), low blood sugar, infections such as tuberculosis, thyroid problems, and some cancers such as lymphoma (NHS; Mayo Clinic). See a doctor if they happen regularly, wake you up, start months or years after menopause symptoms ended, or come with fever, weight loss, pain in one spot, a cough or diarrhea. Contact a health care provider promptly if sweating comes with chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, or a rapid, pounding heartbeat (MedlinePlus). Hot flashes have proven treatments too, so ask about them.

Trial, warranty and availability

30-night trial

Per Orion's refund policy (updated June 4, 2026), contact support within 30 days of delivery; items must be in good condition, and refunds typically process within 7 days of inspection. Returns are free per the product page. If parts arrive on different days, confirm in writing when your 30 days start. Keep the boxes.

2-year warranty

The limited warranty covers the original purchaser for two years from purchase. Extend adds three more for $399. Unlike Eight Sleep, warranty length isn't tied to a subscription. One line matters for non-US buyers: "This Limited Product Warranty is valid only in the jurisdictions where the Covered Product is sold by Company itself." (warranty terms).

US-only for now; Canada unconfirmed

Orion's store is USD-only with no Canadian storefront. We couldn't confirm it sells or ships to Canada, which also matters for the warranty clause above. Canadians should ask Orion before ordering. All prices here are US dollars.

Why Orion isn't our #1 pick

No brand can pay for its ranking on Better Vitals; affiliate commissions never change our order. Orion earns its place on merit, as a strong no-required-subscription option, but not "best overall": the short trial, limited sizes, young track record and owner reports hold it back. Any paid placement on Better Vitals is labelled Sponsored and kept apart from rankings.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Dual-zone water cooling and heating, 50–113°F (per Orion)
  • No required subscription if you pay upfront; lower list than a Pod 6 Queen
  • Tom's Guide and The Strategist found the temperature control effective
  • 2-year warranty not tied to a membership

Cons

  • Tower hum (Tom's Guide), light and bulk
  • Basic tracking that costs $250/yr (required 2 years if financed)
  • Slightly firmer feel (Tom's Guide); app-only control
  • Owner reports of sensor, app and Wi-Fi problems
  • 30-night trial, three sizes, US-only as far as we can confirm

Final verdict

Buy Orion if you're in the US, share a Queen, King or Cal King with a partner who runs at a different temperature, and want water cooling without paying for software. Pay upfront and test hard within 30 nights.

Choose Eight Sleep Pod 6 for the most features, Chilipad 2.0 for a longer-running no-subscription brand with a remote, or BedJet 3 if sweat is the issue and you want to spend under $1,000. Only warm now and then? Try the cheap fixes first.

FAQ

Does Orion Sleep require a subscription?

Not if you pay upfront. Heating, cooling, dual zones and schedules work without a plan. Orion Intelligence (US $250/yr) adds sleep tracking and insights. On October 15, 2026, Orion's product page showed Intelligence as "Required for 2 years" when you choose monthly financing.

How much does Orion Sleep cost?

US list prices are US $2,395 (Queen), US $2,595 (King) and US $2,695 (Cal King), checked October 15, 2026. Orion often runs promos of about US $200 off; the homepage showed System + Sleep Test from US $2,195.

Is Orion cheaper than Eight Sleep?

Yes: US $2,395 vs US $2,899 for a Queen. Over five years, about US $2,395 (no plan) or US $3,645 (with Intelligence) vs about US $4,394 for a Pod 6 Queen with Enhanced Autopilot.

Will Orion fit my bed?

Queen, King and California King only, on mattresses 10" to 16" deep and a standard slatted or platform frame. You also need floor space for a 24" × 9" tower.

Is Orion loud?

Tom's Guide says the tower "makes a low-level 'hum' that some might find distracting." Some owners call it quiet.

Does the Orion Sleep Test diagnose sleep apnea?

No. It's a one-night consumer patch used to set starting temperatures, not a sleep study, and it doesn't diagnose any condition. If you snore loudly, gasp at night or feel very sleepy during the day, talk to a doctor.

Can Orion help with night sweats or hot flashes?

It can make a hot bed more comfortable, but it doesn't treat the cause. See a doctor if night sweats soak your sheets in a cool room, happen regularly, wake you up, start months or years after menopause symptoms ended, or come with fever, weight loss or a cough. Get care promptly if sweating comes with chest pain, shortness of breath or a pounding heartbeat. If hot flashes disrupt your sleep, ask about proven treatments.

Can I buy Orion in Canada?

We couldn't confirm it. Orion's store is USD-only, and its warranty applies only where Orion sells directly. Ask Orion first.
