What Is the ChiliPad Cube?

The ChiliPad Cube is a hydronic mattress pad that circulates temperature-controlled water to cool or warm your bed surface. Manufactured by Sleepme (formerly Chili Technology), it is one of the original active temperature-regulation sleep products and remains the most affordable entry point into water-based mattress cooling.

Unlike passive cooling solutions (gel-infused foams, breathable covers), the ChiliPad actively removes heat from your body using a closed-loop water system, maintaining a consistent surface temperature throughout the night.

How It Works

The system consists of a mattress pad with silicone micro-tubes and a bedside control unit that heats or cools water to your set temperature. Water circulates continuously through the pad, absorbing body heat and carrying it away to the control unit where it is re-cooled. The temperature range spans 55°F to 115°F, adjustable via the control unit or a basic app.

The Cube uses thermoelectric (Peltier) cooling rather than a compressor, which limits its cooling power compared to compressor-based systems like the Eight Sleep Pod but keeps the unit quieter and more compact. Each control unit covers one side of the bed; dual-zone setups require purchasing two units.

Our Testing Experience

Setup was straightforward—fill the reservoir, place the pad, and plug in. The ChiliPad cooled the bed surface noticeably within about 20 minutes, settling to our target of 64°F. It does not cool as aggressively as compressor-based systems; on very hot nights (room temp above 78°F), we noticed the pad struggled to maintain temperatures below 60°F.

The pad itself is thin enough that we did not notice a significant change in mattress feel, which is a plus. The control unit is quieter than the Eight Sleep Hub—more of a gentle hum than a fan sound. The main limitation is the lack of smart features: no sleep tracking, no autopilot scheduling, and no automatic temperature adjustments during the night. You set a temperature and it holds it. For many users, that simplicity is actually a feature.

The Bottom Line

The ChiliPad Cube delivers effective temperature regulation at a fraction of the cost of premium smart mattress covers. It lacks the biometric tracking and AI optimization of the Eight Sleep Pod, but for users who simply want a cooler bed without complexity or subscriptions, it is the best value in active mattress cooling.
