How It Works

Each pair of Black Berkey elements is rated for approximately 6,000 gallons (3,000 gallons per element), which translates to roughly 3–5 years of use for a typical household of two to four people. The elements are cleanable—when flow rate slows, you scrub the exterior with a Scotch-Brite pad to remove accumulated sediment and restore performance.

California and Iowa have restricted Berkey sales due to the company not completing state-specific certification processes. Our Testing Experience

We tested the Big Berkey (2.25-gallon capacity) over six weeks in a household using municipal tap water. Setup was simple: assemble the two stainless steel chambers, prime the Black Berkey elements by running water through them under faucet pressure for a few minutes, and begin filtering. The initial fill took approximately 45–60 minutes to fully filter through both elements by gravity.

Taste improvement was immediately noticeable—chlorine flavor and the slight metallic note present in our tap water were eliminated. We sent before-and-after water samples to a third-party lab for basic testing. Chlorine was reduced to undetectable levels, and lead (present at 3 ppb in our tap water) was reduced to below 1 ppb. The primary inconvenience is the manual pour-and-wait workflow. Unlike an under-sink RO system or a countertop unit like the AquaTru, the Berkey requires you to refill the upper chamber and wait for gravity to do its work. For a family that goes through several gallons per day, this means refilling two to three times daily. The unit also takes up meaningful counter space—the Big Berkey stands about 21 inches tall with a 8.5-inch diameter.

Compared to the AquaTru countertop RO system, the Berkey does not remove dissolved minerals (TDS), which some users consider a benefit (minerals like calcium and magnesium remain in the water) and others see as a limitation (fluoride requires separate PF-2 add-on filters, and total dissolved solids are not reduced). Reverse osmosis systems like the AquaTru remove virtually everything, including minerals, which is why some RO users add minerals back.

Long-term durability impressed us. The stainless steel chambers show no signs of wear, discoloration, or corrosion after extended use. The spigot is well-built and flows smoothly. The system is available in multiple sizes—from the Travel Berkey (1.5 gallons, ideal for one to two people) up to the Crown Berkey (6 gallons, suitable for larger families or small groups). Most households find the Big Berkey the best balance of capacity and countertop footprint. The system also accommodates up to four Black Berkey elements, which doubles the flow rate for households that need faster throughput.
